Veteran Gets ‘Like-New' Car with Help of Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie Donation

PHOENIX – U.S. Air Force veteran Mick Shapiro received the keys to a virtually ‘new’ car before Military Appreciation Day at the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball game Sunday, thanks to a community service program supported in part with a donation from Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie LLP.

The vehicle presentation was coordinated through GEICO and Recycled Rides, a nationwide program in which collision repair companies, insurers and others team up to repair and donate vehicles to families in need.

Shapiro, a former Aerospace Control and Warning Systems Operator at Luke Air Force Base,  has struggled financially since suffering a debilitating injury a number of years ago. Unable to work, the family soon exhausted their savings, lost their home and vehicles.

Now rebuilding his life, Shapiro was nominated by the U.S. Veterans Initiative because of his commitment to completing his education at the Maricopa Skills Center and reuniting his family under one household. Shapiro also volunteers his time helping other veterans in need.

GEICO donated the car and technicians at Caliber Collision donated personal time to refurbish the vehicle. Other local businesses also donated gifts for the family as well as materials and services for the auto.

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to participate in this outstanding program, and appreciate the efforts of GEICO and its other community partners to give back and support the men and women of our nation’s military services,” said Dan Goldfine, a partner at Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie.
